Match Situation on Day One
India A endured a dismal opening day against New Zealand A in the first unofficial Test in Lincoln on Saturday. Sent in to bat, the visitors were bundled out for just 113 runs in under forty overs as the home team’s bowling attack dominated proceedings from the start. In response, New Zealand A surpassed India A’s total before losing their opening wicket, finishing the day at 135 for 3 and holding a slender 22-run lead with seven wickets remaining.
- Simon Keene wreaked havoc on the Indian batting lineup, finishing with stellar figures of 5 for 24.
- Zak Gibson provided excellent support with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 29 runs to dismantle the middle order.
- Rhys Mariu top-scored for the hosts with a fluent 76 runs off 137 balls before falling lbw.
- Yash Rathod offered late resistance for India A with a quickfire 44 not out off 49 deliveries.
Key Performances and Outlook
The visiting side struggled significantly against disciplined bowling on a responsive pitch. KL Rahul fell for a duck early in the innings, putting immediate pressure on the top order. Although Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal attempted to steady the ship with a brief partnership, regular strikes from Keene and Gibson left the visitors reeling at 58 for 6. Rathod’s aggressive knock at the tail end, which included three boundaries and three maximums, pushed the total past the century mark.
New Zealand A capitalized on their opponents’ mistakes as openers Mariu and Curtis Heaphy put together a crucial 132-run partnership. Even though Auqib Nabi struck twice in consecutive deliveries late in the day to give India A a glimmer of hope, Heaphy remained unbeaten on 37. The touring side will aim to claim the remaining wickets swiftly on the second morning to restrict the deficit, while the hosts will look to extend their advantage.
