Middlesbrough laid down a major marker in the promotion race by thrashing Bolton Wanderers 5-1 on Friday night to climb to the summit of the Championship table. Kim Hellberg’s side produced a masterclass in attacking football away from home, registering an astonishing 31 shots at goal and overwhelming their opponents from the first whistle.
- Will Lankshear scored twice to bring his tally to 11 goals in 12 league matches this season.
- Middlesbrough accumulated 4.16 expected goals and racked up 19 shots in the first half alone.
- Bolton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu made several impressive saves to prevent an even heavier defeat.
- The victory moves Boro to 25 points after 12 matches, four goals clear at the top of the individual scoring charts.
Dominant Display Under the Lights
The visitors played with slick and incisive movement that left the home side chasing shadows for long spells. Lankshear continued his remarkable form following his summer arrival, cementing his reputation as the division’s leading marksman. Despite Bolton attempting to play aggressively and take control, Middlesbrough’s creative players proved far too sharp in the final third. Former managers and pundits praised the performance, with analysts describing the squad as exceptionally hardworking and the benchmark for automatic promotion this term. Head coach Kim Hellberg hailed the beauty of his side’s execution and praised the impact of substitutes who came off the bench to maintain the high tempo.
Building for Premier League Ambitions
With seven wins from their opening 12 league fixtures, Middlesbrough have matched the strong start they managed at the same stage last campaign. However, the squad remains focused on avoiding the late-season stumble that cost them automatic promotion last year. Lankshear expressed his gratitude for playing in such an attacking unit, highlighting the stellar service provided by wingers Tommy Conway and Amario Cozier-Duberry. As the promotion race intensifies, this five-star performance serves as a clear warning to all rivals that Middlesbrough possess both the depth and quality required to sustain a serious title challenge.
