India head coach Gautam Gambhir has hailed his team’s remarkable T20I series victory over New Zealand, emphasizing that the players’ ruthless approach more than compensated for an absolute lack of proper preparation time ahead of the tour. The visiting squad arrived in Christchurch on October 20 and managed only a single training session before stepping out for the opening match of the five-match series on October 22. Despite battling severe jet-lag and unfamiliar conditions against a seasoned home side, India secured the series by winning the first three encounters.
- Incredible Effort: Gambhir praised the squad for delivering performances despite having only one day to prepare.
- Inexperienced Squad: Around 70 to 80 percent of the touring T20 players were visiting New Zealand for the very first time.
- Captaincy Praise: Head coach Gambhir credited skipper Shreyas Iyer for extracting stellar performances from an inexperienced bowling attack.
- Series Outcome: India successfully claimed the series 3-2 after New Zealand fought back to win the final two matches.
Overcoming Extreme Conditions
Addressing the media following the conclusion of the final fixture, Gambhir pointed out the severe logistical and environmental hurdles the touring contingent faced. With minimal time to adapt to contrasting weather patterns and unfamiliar pitch dimensions, the young players showed tremendous character. Gambhir noted that managing back-to-back series left virtually no breathing room for specific T20 tactical planning, making the early victories even more commendable.
Building for the Future
Gambhir also highlighted the strategic necessity of blooding youngsters during tough overseas assignments, especially with an eye on upcoming global tournaments. Without senior stalwarts like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya available for the shortest format, captain Shreyas Iyer had to marshall a relatively inexperienced bowling lineup under immense pressure. Gambhir expressed immense satisfaction with how the team handled high-pressure moments, reiterating his firm belief in maintaining a professional mindset without relying on excuses.
