German tennis star Alexander Zverev has clinched the world number one ranking for the first time in his professional career following a straight-sets victory over Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor at the Vienna Open. The 29-year-old secured the necessary ranking points to ascend to the summit of men’s tennis, marking a monumental milestone after years of intense physical challenges and near-misses on the global stage.
Zverev’s rise to the top spot was solidified after capturing two Grand Slam titles earlier in the season and benefiting from reigning champion Jannik Sinner cutting his season short due to an injury. The achievement makes the German player the 30th man to hold the coveted number one ranking since the official computer rankings were introduced back in 1973.
Road to the Top
- Alexander Zverev secured the decisive ranking points by defeating Tallon Griekspoor to reach the Vienna Open quarter-finals.
- The 29-year-old won two Grand Slam titles during the year to fuel his historic ascent to the top spot.
- Zverev becomes only the 30th man in tennis history to claim the official world number one ranking.
- He joins an elite historical group, becoming one of the oldest players to first achieve the milestone since John Newcombe in 1974.
Overcoming Adversity
The journey to the summit has been fraught with hurdles for the Hamburg-born player, who famously suffered a severe and career-threatening ankle ligament tear during his French Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal in 2022. Having also managed Type 1 diabetes throughout his professional career, Zverev had to rebuild his game extensively following major surgery and prolonged rehabilitation periods.
Reflecting on his momentous achievement, Zverev expressed immense pride in reaching the pinnacle of the sport after years of persistent dedication. The official rankings update on Monday will formally reflect his new status as world number one, crowning a remarkable comeback season that validates his enduring belief in his own abilities.
