Legendary Sports Photographer Peter Robinson Celebrates Career in New Exhibition

Renowned sports photographer Peter Robinson, whose lens captured legendary football icons across 13 World Cups over a remarkable two-decade career with FIFA, is currently being celebrated in a special new exhibition showcasing his unique off-field approach to the beautiful game. Despite traveling to competitions in close to 100 countries and photographing global greats such as Diego Maradona, Pelé, Lionel Messi, and Franz Beckenbauer, Robinson famously admits that he has never been a traditional fan of the sport itself. Curator Hugo Worthy noted that this deliberate detachment allowed Robinson to capture poignant human moments and powerful stories that transcend standard sports journalism and reflect deeper elements of the human condition.

A Storied Career Across Global Tournaments

Starting his journey into professional photography during the 1960s after studying at the Leicester School of Art, Robinson initially took on modest media roles before becoming the official photographer for the Football Association and later FIFA up until the 1994 tournament. His portfolio includes iconic images such as Italian captain Franco Baresi receiving his runners-up medal after the 1994 final in Los Angeles, an intimate shot carefully prepared with flash lighting to eliminate harsh shadows. Another classic piece features Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton preparing to take a corner while young fans look on with intense admiration. More recently, Robinson briefly came out of retirement to photograph matches at the 2026 World Cup, proving his enduring eye for compelling visual narratives.

  • Captured iconic moments across 13 different World Cups over a twenty-year span.
  • Served as FIFA’s official photographer leading up to the 1994 World Cup final in Los Angeles.
  • Honored with a lifetime achievement in sports award at the prestigious Lucie Awards in 2025.
  • Current exhibition at New Parks Library features 40 distinct photographs highlighting off-field stories.

Exhibition Details and Community Impact

The current exhibition featuring 40 of his most celebrated images is being hosted at the New Parks Library, situated on the very same street where Robinson grew up in Leicester. The display aims to inspire local communities by demonstrating how an ordinary upbringing can lead to a global career spanning nearly a century of sporting history. Organizers hope that Robinson’s extensive historical archive will eventually find a permanent home at De Montfort University, bringing his remarkable artistic journey full circle.
