India has officially landed the historic hosting rights for the senior Weightlifting World Championships in 2029, with the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat chosen as the main venue. The announcement was made by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) on Sunday following its crucial Executive Board meeting held in Ningbo, China. This marks a landmark milestone for the nation, as it will be the very first time India hosts the prestigious senior global showcase for the sport.

During the same meeting, the international governing body also confirmed the host cities for multiple upcoming global competitions as part of an effort to streamline and strengthen its international calendar. Alongside the 2029 senior tournament awarded to India, Russia’s capital Moscow was officially confirmed as the host city for the subsequent 2030 senior edition. Furthermore, the executive board awarded the 2028 World Youth Championships to Prishtina in Kosovo, while Caracas in Venezuela was handed the hosting responsibilities for the IWF World Junior Championships.

Global Expansion and New Hosts

  • Ahmedabad will host the senior Weightlifting World Championships for the first time in 2029.
  • Moscow, Russia, was confirmed as the host city for the 2030 senior world event.
  • Prishtina, Kosovo, secured the rights to stage the 2028 World Youth Championships.
  • Caracas, Venezuela, was selected to host the IWF World Junior Championships.

Strategic Sporting Ambitions for Ahmedabad

The decision to award four major global competitions simultaneously highlights the global reach and expanding footprint of weightlifting. IWF General Secretary Jose Quinones noted that the inclusion of new host nations demonstrates the growing worldwide appeal of the sport and the high demand among countries to organize premier international fixtures. For India, securing this event aligns with its broader ambitions of hosting major multi-sport spectacles in the coming years. Ahmedabad is already scheduled to serve as the host city for the upcoming 2030 Commonwealth Games and is further positioned as the country’s primary proposed host venue should India successfully secure the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympic Games. The successful staging of the 2029 weightlifting showcase will serve as a crucial test of the city’s infrastructure and logistical capabilities on the global stage.
