Middle East Conflict Forces Postponement of Major International Sports Events

The Middle East conflict has forced the postponement and cancellation of numerous high-profile sporting events across the region, including football tournaments, motor racing, and tennis. Because security concerns have escalated significantly following recent missile attacks and regional tensions, governing bodies are rapidly shifting fixtures. As a result, athletes, teams, and fans face widespread calendar disruptions as organisers scramble to find alternative venues globally.

  • The 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia is delayed by almost a year.
  • Formula 1 evaluates security for the upcoming Qatar and Abu Dhabi races.
  • The Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition in Riyadh is postponed by two months.
  • The Dakar Rally shifts its upcoming edition to Portugal and Morocco.

Motorsport and Football Disruption

Formula 1 faces a major dilemma regarding the final races of the season. Qatar is scheduled to host an event at Lusail International Circuit in November, followed by Abu Dhabi. However, officials continue to monitor security closely after earlier cancellations in the year. Meanwhile, football has also seen major changes. The Asian Cup will now run from December 2027 to January 2028 instead of early next year.

Domestic football has not escaped the turbulence. Although the Saudi Pro League initially tried to maintain normal operations, this weekend’s full fixture round was called off. Organisers stated that the calendar needed recalibration after the Asian Cup delay. Additionally, AFC Champions League matches faced travel complications as several star players stayed home due to growing safety concerns.

Tennis, Rally and Combat Sports Affected

Tennis stars including Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz face delays. The Six Kings Slam exhibition in Riyadh was postponed by two months. Meanwhile, the 2026 WTA Finals moved to Indian Wells after a mutual agreement terminated the Saudi hosting contract early. Combat sports also felt the impact as boxing cards and WWE events experienced venue changes or withdrawals.

Rally events faced major relocations as well. The Dakar Rally moved its route to start in Portugal and finish in Morocco after seven years in Saudi Arabia. Because safety remains paramount for all participating personnel, sports federations continue assessing ongoing risks across the region to protect athletes.
