Atletico Madrid secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Espanyol on Saturday, courtesy of an 89th-minute strike by Alex Baena. The crucial win in Cornella moves Diego Simeone’s side within two points of La Liga leaders Barcelona, keeping the title race intensely competitive.
Spain international Baena smashed home a decisive shot from the edge of the penalty area following an assist by substitute Julian Alvarez. The dramatic late winner extended Atletico’s winning streak across all competitions to six consecutive matches, underlining their resilient form this campaign.
Match Situation and Key Moments
- Alex Baena scored in the 89th minute to give Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win.
- The result moves second-placed Atletico within two points of league leaders Barcelona.
- Espanyol came closest in the first half when Leandro Cabrera hit the crossbar.
- Atletico’s Marcos Llorente also struck the woodwork with a long-range effort after an hour.
Both teams created scoring opportunities in a tight contest, but missed chances kept the scoreline blank for the majority of the match. Espanyol came agonizingly close before the break when Leandro Cabrera rattled the crossbar. Atletico responded after the interval when Marcos Llorente hit the same woodwork with a powerful long-range effort just past the hour mark.
Goalkeeper Jan Oblak also played a vital role in preserving the clean sheet, making a sharp save in stoppage time to deny Pol Lozano and ensure all three points traveled back with the visitors. The victory heaps pressure on Hansi Flick’s Barcelona ahead of their fixture against Real Betis.
Managerial Praise and Tournament Implications
Manager Diego Simeone praised Baena’s development and mental fortitude following the midfielder’s fifth league goal of the season. After a difficult previous year hampered by injuries, Baena has rediscovered his peak form since winning the World Cup with Spain over the summer.
Simeone emphasized that the team’s relentless belief until the final whistle was the key factor in breaking down a stubborn Espanyol defense. With the fixture schedule intensifying, Atletico continue to demonstrate the depth and resilience required to challenge for the domestic crown.
