The very first match of this edition of the Cricket World Cup started with a comfortable victory of the current runners-up over the defending champions. New Zealand beat England for 9 wickets at Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmadabad, India, today.
After winning the toss of the first match of Cricket World Cup, New Zealand decided to bowl first. Matt Henry struck the first blow when the opening partnership was going well at 40 runs in 7 overs. A seemingly struggling David Malan (14) was caught by Tom Latham. Soon in form Bairstow (33) was caught by Daryl Mitchell off Mitchell Santner.
Wickets then fell at regular intervals with Harry Brook (25) and Moeen Ali (11) departing cheaply. Jos Buttler (43) and Joe Root (77) then anchored the innings and took the team to a decent total of 282/9 in the stipulated 50 overs.
In reply, New Zealand managed to reach the total of 283 in just 36.2 overs losing only the wicket of Will Young (10). Devon Conway (152 not out) and Rachin Ravindra (123 n.o) took brilliant centuries in the chase. The sole wicket was taken by Sam Curren. Thus New Zealand could have a sweet revenge for the loss of the 2019 Cricket World Cup final match.
