Mirabai Chanu bags first gold for India at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. It was a record-breaking performance from Chanu as she won the Gold medal for Women’s 49 Kg Weightlifting. It was very exciting for Indian fans to see the first gold medal of the season.
Mirabai lifted a total of 201 Kg- 88 Kg in snatch and 113 Kg in clean and jerk- to create a new CWG record. Further, it was a personal best for Mirabai Chanu herself.
India bagged a total of 4 medals on day 2 at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. All the medals came from Weightlifting events.
The first medal for India came from Sanket Mahadev Sargar, who claimed a silver in the men’s 55 Kg category Weightlifting. He was aiming for a gold, but two failed clean and jerk attempts shattered his chances. He settled for a combined lift of 248 Kg(113 Kg+ 135 Kg) to finish second.
The next medal came from a fellow lifter Gururaja Poojary, the silver medalist in the last edition (56 Kg), took the bronze in men’s 61 Kg. The fourth medal of the day was bagged by Bindyarani Sorokhaibam in the women’s 55 Kg category Weightlifting.
Other news on day 2 include Lovlina Borgohain starting her campaign with a 5-0 win in Boxing. The women’s hockey team also won, but the defending champions women’s table tennis team crashed out.
Altogether, India had a great second day at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. While India bagged 4 medals, we should not forget about the other athletes who fought hard to win, but did not succeed.
