Shradul Thakur replaced Axar Patel in the T20 World Cup squad. The fast bowling all rounder replaced all rounder Axar Patel in the 15 member squad. The selection committee may have reconsidered after Shradul Thakur’s performance in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings.
As the pace all rounder Hardik Pandya was not seen bowling in the IPL due to fitness issues, the selectors couldn’t neglect the possibility of him being unable to play.
As long as Ravindra Jadeja is playing, Axar Patel is not needed, however, he is on standby for if Jaddu gets injured.
The following players are to assist team India in their preparations at Dubai. These players include Avesh Khan, Urman Malik, Harshal Patel, Lukman Meriwala, Venkatesh Iyer, Karan Sharma, Shahbaz Ahmed and K. Gowtham. The fact that leg-spinner Karan Sharma was included in the list was a surprise. His closeness to the mentor Mahendra Singh Dhoni may have factored in to the inclusion.

The 15 member squad include Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma (Vice-Captain), K.L.Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant(Wicket Keeper), Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul Chahar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shradul Thakur, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami as well as standby players Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Axar Patel.
Although Shradul Thakur replaced Axar Patel in the main 15 member squad, he is on standby, if anyone is injured.
