Virat Kohli steps down from the captaincy of the Indian T20 team after the T20 World Cup this year. The big decision was announced by Kohli via twitter. After the T20 World Cup, he will step down and Rohit Sharma will take over.
Kohli pointed out that he is doing this to focus on his batting skills which has declined in the last year. The responsibility of the captaincy over all three formats has affected the champion’s batting skills. So he has decided to pass on the captaincy of the T20 team to Rohit.
Kohli won 38 of the 65 Test matches, 65 of the 95 ODIs and 29 of the 45 T20s that he captained.
Rohit Sharma is by far the best replacement for Kohli. His record as a captain and vice-captain speaks for itself. He is also the most successful IPL captain by far.
The IPL cannot be taken as a small achievement as it is the most sought out league after the T20 league with maximum number of players from around the world.
Rohit won 5 IPL titles in his captaincy, leading the Mumbai Indians (MI) to victory in 2013,2015,2017,2019 and 2020.
Since he took the reins from Harbajan Singh in 2013, he has led MI to 5 titles and 6 playoffs in the 8 seasons as a captain.
He is an astounding T20 captain as well. He won 15 out of the 19 matches he captained including victories in the Nidahas tri-series in Sri Lanka in 2018 and a 3-0 series sweep against West Indies at home in 2018.
Even though the BCCI denied the rumours at first, Virat Kohli himself announcing resignation on social media put a light to the matters.
