Malinga retires from all forms of cricket. After almost 15 years of bowling leg crushing yorkers and terrorizing the world’s best batsmen with his unique arm swing, Malinga has decided to retire.
He was one of the best white ball bowlers and the finest in T20s. 38 years old, he was also the captain of Sri Lanks’s 2014 T20 WorldCup winning team. He posted a message on twitter announcing his decision to retire from all forms of cricket.
Malinga played against West Indies in Pallekele last in a T20I match for Sri Lanka.
Malinga retired with a total of 546 wickets across all formats for Sri Lanka. He had already retired from Test cricket in 2011 and from ODIs a short while later, but continued playing T20Is for the national side.
He wasn’t on the upcoming WorldCup squad for Sri Lanka. He had a desire to lead Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup, which was to be held in Australia in October-November 2020, but has been postponed due to covid, to next month.
He has got 170 wickets from 122 IPL matches, 107 wickets in 84 T20Is, 338 wickets in 226 ODIs and 101 wickets in 30 Test matches.
He was the first to get 100 T20I wickets,and is fourth highest in the wicket taker category,behind Dwayne Bravo, Imran Thahir and Sunil Narine.
After being released by Mumbai Indians, he also announced his retirement from franchise cricket this January.
As one of the best T20I bowlers of all time, he was a star attraction in the teams he played, such as Indian Premier League, Big Bash League, Caribbean Premier League and other franchise tournaments.
He was part of the Mumbai Indians four of the 5 times in which they won the league.
He has also got two T20I hat-tricks and three hat-tricks in ODI cricket, with his performance against South Africa in the 2007 World Cup in West Indies. With all those records, the legend Malinga retires from all forms of cricket.
