Daniil Medvedev wins maiden Grand Slam title – leaves Novak Djokovic stunned. The US open final was won by Daniil Medvedev beating Novak Djokovic.
Medvedev thrashed Djokovic with straight sets victory in the US open final on Sunday. Djokovic’s dream of a record breaking 21st major men’s singles title was shattered when Medvedev won the Grand Slam. Medvedev, being the second ranked in Russia, dominated Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 denying the first calendar year Grand Slam since 1969 keeping Djokovic with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal atop the title list.
Medvedev, being the 2019 US open runner up, launched his slam quest by capturing his first Grand Slam title in his third Slam final. This was a rematch of February’s Australian Open final, which he won in straight sets.
Djokovic’s dream to win the US, French anAustralian opens and Wimbledon in the same year, ever since 52 years ago was left unfulfilled at the last hurdle.
Djokovic was in tears when he paid tributes to the crowd, who seemed to support him even in the loss.
Djokovic became the third man to fall in the final match instead of joining immortals Laver and Don Budge who competed in the first men’s Slam in 1938.
Djokovic won four consecutive Slams, which ended with the 2016 French Open, setting a record in 2015 and 2016. His 27 27 match Slam win streak was halted after this match.
Medvedev took the first set in 36 minutes, without facing a break point.
Djokovic wasted his break chances and Medvedev held to 1-1.
After botching a forehand in the following point, Djokovic sent a backhand as Medvedev held to 2-2.
Djokovic mis-hits a backhand volley in the fifth game which gave Medvedev a break and a 3-2 lead. This led to Medvedev claiming the set as he held 3 times.
Djokovic held at love in the fifth game but Medvedev held again to 5-1 and served for the eighth game.
Medvedev double faulted to championship point again. Serving again for the match at 5-4, Medvedev got over the line on his third chance after 2 hours and 16 minutes.
