Robert Lewandowski netted an incredible 55 goals for Bayern Munich this season which earned him the German Player of the Year Award 2020.
Not since Kevin De Bruyne of Belgium took the honour in 2015 for Wolfsburg Robert Lewandowski becomes the first non-German winner of the award.
In a recent interview with the ESPN he was asked who deserved to win this year’s Ballon d’Or to which he gave a very prompt reply “Me”, he went on to say he felt he was robbed of the prize because of the pandemic.
The prestigious Ballon d’Or committee declared in June that there will not be a prize ceremony this year because the criteria of evaluation are not met as there were fewer matches played between January to March during which the performances are evaluated.
Robert scored 55 goals in 2019-20 season across Bundesliga, the German Cup, and The Champions League which gave his club their second treble in seven years.
“We won everything we could with Bayern,” he added. “I was the top scorer in all competitions I featured in and I think a player who achieves this would win the Ballon d’Or.”
However, all is not won by the 32-Year-Old striker from Poland, as he came up short against Ciro Immobile for the Golden Boot for Europe’s top scorer across all leagues.
He also commented for that he thinks it is unfair to compare it in the first place as Bundesliga has lesser team compared to other leagues in Europe, whereas all other leagues have 20 team participation for the league matches.
Although Robert Lewandowski’s incredible stats of the season and the German Player of the Year Award didn’t go down well with the German National Team Coach Joachim Low.
He said in an interview with the kicker that Bayern Munich’s stopper Manuel Neuer deserved the individual honours more for his efforts in front of the post.
“Manu has been in superb form throughout the 2019-2020 season,” Low said.
“I have nothing against Robert Lewandowski, he is an extraordinary goal stopper but for me this year the world’s best footballer would be Manuel Neuer. Just looking at those saves at the mini-tournament in Lisbon.”
