India captain Harmanpreet Singh struck a superb hat-trick to power his team to a 4-2 victory over Malaysia at the Asian Champions Trophy on Sunday. The dominant result sealed India’s fourth consecutive victory in the round-robin stage as both Asian heavyweights look ahead to the tournament semifinals.

  • Harmanpreet Singh netted in the 3rd, 33rd, and 58th minutes to secure his treble.
  • Sukhjeet Singh added a brilliant 43rd-minute field goal set up by vice-captain Hardik Singh.
  • Akhimullah Anuar and Shello Silverius scored the goals for Malaysia.
  • Both nations have already qualified for the semifinals alongside South Korea and Japan.

Match Action and Tactical Control

India wasted no time asserting authority over the contest, taking the lead inside three minutes when Harmanpreet unleashed a thunderous drag-flick from an early penalty corner past Malaysian goalkeeper Hafizuddin Othman. Malaysia responded strongly in the second quarter, earning consecutive penalty corners before Akhimullah Anuar pounced on a loose ball set up by Faiz Jali to make it 1-1 before halftime.

The five-time tournament champions came out firing in the third quarter. Harmanpreet restored the lead in the 33rd minute with another precise penalty corner execution. India widened the margin ten minutes later after Hardik Singh dispossessed an opponent in midfield and fed Sukhjeet Singh, who produced a spectacular tomahawk finish. Harmanpreet sealed his hat-trick in the 58th minute from a penalty stroke awarded after his goal-bound attempt hit a defender’s body. Shello Silverius slotted home a late consolation for Malaysia in the 60th minute, but India remained untroubled.

Tournament Standings and Next Fixtures

The triumph maintained India’s unblemished campaign, building on previous pool victories over Bangladesh (13-0), China (5-2), and Japan (4-1). Having already secured their passage into the semifinals, India will conclude their preliminary fixtures against South Korea on Monday. Malaysia will face off against Japan in their final group match before knockout hockey begins.
