Punjab, Odisha and Tamil Nadu have emerged as the primary frontrunners to host the 2030 FIH Hockey World Cups for both men and women. Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath Singh confirmed the development on Friday, highlighting a strategic nationwide push to bring major international fixtures to different states.
Odisha has previously staged the prestigious men’s tournament on two separate occasions, positioning itself as a reliable host with world-class facilities. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu successfully organized the men’s Junior World Cup last year across Chennai and Madurai, and Punjab is currently hosting the men’s Asian Champions Trophy—marking its first international hockey event in seventeen years since the 2009 Gold Cup.
Key Contenders and Expansion Plans
- Frontrunners: Punjab, Odisha and Tamil Nadu are leading the race to host the 2030 FIH World Cups for men and women.
- Previous Hosting: Odisha has hosted the senior men’s World Cup twice, while Tamil Nadu staged the Junior World Cup last year.
- New Venues: Madhya Pradesh is set to host the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy in Bhopal from November 19 to 28.
- Future Ambitions: Hockey India aims to build international standard infrastructure across every corner of the country.
Boosting Domestic Infrastructure
Speaking on the selection of Punjab for the ongoing Asian Champions Trophy, the administration emphasized the state’s rich heritage and the high concentration of players representing the national team. Officials noted that many athletes desired an opportunity for their families to witness them play live on home soil.
Beyond the senior World Cup bids, Hockey India continues to expand its geographical footprint by awarding upcoming tournaments to regions that have historically produced exceptional talent. Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh will soon host its first-ever international competition with the upcoming Women’s Asian Champions Trophy, reflecting a broader commitment to grassroots development and elite infrastructure expansion ahead of upcoming global multi-sport cycles.
