Veteran striker Billy Sharp has officially reversed his decision to retire from professional football, signing with Northern Premier League side AFC Rushden & Diamonds ahead of their historic FA Cup first round fixture against Burton Albion. The 40-year-old forward, who announced his retirement last month following a prolific career, has stepped back onto the pitch to bolster the squad following the suspension of midfielder James Clifton.
The upcoming clash at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday marks a milestone moment for Rushden & Diamonds as they make their first-ever appearance in the FA Cup proper. Should Sharp take to the field, it will officially mark the 814th professional appearance of a remarkable career that has spanned two decades and yielded hundreds of goals across the English football pyramid.
Career Background and Journey
Sharp is widely celebrated for his exploits with boyhood club Sheffield United, where he netted 129 goals across 377 appearances in multiple spells. His extensive career also featured stints with Doncaster Rovers, where he spent his final full season making 45 appearances and scoring 14 goals across all competitions before his initial contract concluded over the summer.
