Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza launched a stinging critique of his teammates following a 19-run defeat to Afghanistan in Sharjah, which handed the opposition an unassailable T20I series lead. Despite anchoring the chase with a magnificent unbeaten 106 off 56 deliveries, Raza could not prevent defeat after Afghanistan posted 221 for 7, propelled by a blistering 116 off 50 balls from Azmatullah Omarzai.
Raza was particularly critical of the attitude shown in the field after reducing Afghanistan to a precarious 5 for 4 inside the fourth over. He stated that visible complacency crept into the side prematurely, expecting an easy finish before the opposition mounted a stunning lower-order recovery through Omarzai and Ijaz Ahmad Ahmadzai, who struck a quickfire 52.
- Afghanistan recovered from 5 for 4 to post a formidable total of 221 for 7 in 20 overs.
- Azmatullah Omarzai smashed 116 runs from just 50 deliveries to turn the match around.
- Sikandar Raza scored an unbeaten 106 off 56 balls, single-handedly keeping Zimbabwe in the chase.
- Zimbabwe ultimately fell short by 19 runs, conceding the T20I series to Afghanistan in Sharjah.
Match Situation And Turning Point
Zimbabwe held complete control during the early stages of the contest, capturing five wickets with just 45 runs on the board at the halfway mark of the innings. However, the inability to close out the remaining batting partnership allowed Afghanistan to mount a massive counter-attack. Raza noted that the mental shift and loss of intensity after the initial breakthrough proved costly against a resilient opponent on a high-scoring ground.
Internal Review And Moving Forward
Addressing the media after the game, Raza made it clear that internal discussions would take place behind closed doors regarding player conduct and focus levels. Although he kept his emotions in check during his brilliant century knock, the veteran all-rounder stressed that taking international matches for granted will always backfire. Zimbabwe will now look to regroup ahead of the final fixtures of the ongoing tour to salvage pride and address structural flaws in their performance.
