Veteran Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar stands on the brink of achieving two significant personal milestones as Team India prepares for their upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand. The opening fixture of the series is scheduled to take place at Christchurch on October 22, 2026, offering the experienced seamer an immediate opportunity to add to his impressive international resume.
Known affectionately as the ‘Swing King’, Bhuvneshwar is eyeing a return to regular international action after missing appearances in recent years. His last international outing was during the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal against England at Adelaide. Since then, the 36-year-old has enjoyed a stellar resurgence in the Indian Premier League representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where his consistent wicket-taking exploits helped secure back-to-back league titles in 2025 and 2026.
Milestones in Sight
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar requires just 10 more wickets to complete a century of T20I scalps, which would make him the fifth Indian bowler to reach the milestone after Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel.
- He currently sits on 294 international wickets across all formats, putting him within striking distance of the prestigious 300-wicket landmark for India.
- Achieving 300 international wickets would make him only the 14th overall bowler from India and the ninth fast bowler from the country to enter the exclusive club.
- The fast bowler enters the New Zealand tour as part of a strong 16-member Indian squad led by captain Shreyas Iyer for the five-match rubber.
What Happens Next
The first T20I begins on Thursday in Christchurch, where team management will assess conditions to determine the final playing eleven. If selected, Bhuvneshwar’s ability to extract movement with the new ball will be vital for India against a formidable New Zealand batting lineup. Successfully capturing these milestones during the series would firmly cement his status as one of the finest swing bowlers of the modern era.
