South Africa openers Marques Ackerman and Aiden Markram dominated the opening session of the series-deciding third Test against Australia, reaching 140 for no loss by lunch at Newlands. After being sent in to bat under the Cape Town sunshine on Tuesday, the pair capitalized on a benign pitch and a toothless Australian bowling attack to pile on the runs at a rapid run rate.
Ackerman brought up a commanding maiden Test half-century, remaining unbeaten on 82 off 75 deliveries, while Markram played a solid supporting hand, finishing the morning session on 56 not out. Australia’s decision to bowl first backfired completely as their pace battery struggled for movement, compounded by a dropped catch from Travis Head that reprieved Markram just before the interval.
Dominant Morning Session
- South Africa reached 140 without loss at lunch on the opening day in Cape Town.
- Marques Ackerman scored an unbeaten 82, registering his maiden Test fifty.
- Aiden Markram contributed an undefeated 56 after surviving a dropped catch by Travis Head.
- Australia’s pace attack failed to secure a breakthrough, conceding runs at over five per over.
Match Situation and Lineup Changes
Australia entered the crucial contest with four changes to their starting XI, notably welcoming back Cameron Green, Nathan Lyon, Josh Inglis, and Cooper Connolly while dropping Scott Boland, Nic Maddinson, and Beau Webster. Star batsman Steve Smith was a late withdrawal after failing to recover from a neck injury sustained during their heavy second Test defeat.
Captain Pat Cummins opted to bowl first in search of early seam movement, but the strategy fell flat as Ackerman and Markram batted through the entire first session untroubled. Ackerman punctuated the dominant display with a flurry of boundaries against Mitchell Starc right before the break, leaving the tourists facing a massive task to get back into the match.
