Former India leg-spinner Amit Mishra has opened up about the lesser-known personality of current national team head coach Gautam Gambhir, shedding light on his humility and fierce loyalty away from the cricket pitch. Despite Gambhir’s reputation as one of the most intense and fiercely competitive figures in Indian cricket history, Mishra revealed that the former opening batsman remained grounded and deeply respectful of his friendships outside the white lines.
Humility Beyond Wealth
During a detailed conversation, Mishra recalled how Gambhir never let his financial success affect personal relationships. Even though Gambhir had access to luxury vehicles like BMWs and Mercedes during their playing days, he frequently asked Mishra to pick him up in an ordinary Maruti Alto. The former spinner emphasized that Gambhir possessed immense self-respect and never displayed any sense of arrogance or material superiority toward his friends or teammates.

- The former spinner noted that Gambhir never exhibited any attitude of wealth or superiority around peers.
- Mishra shared that despite on-field arguments, Gambhir always called him later to patch things up.
- Both veterans shared long-standing dressing room ties across international cricket and IPL franchises.
The On-Field Fire Versus Off-Field Loyalty
Mishra also shared an interesting anecdote highlighting Gambhir’s ability to compartmentalize aggressive on-field behavior from personal bonds. The veteran spinner recounted an occasion when the two clashed and exchanged sharp words during the heat of a match. However, true to his character, Gambhir would put the confrontation behind him immediately after the final whistle, contacting Mishra later in the evening to invite him out for dinner.
While Gambhir represented Delhi and Mishra played domestic cricket for Haryana, the pair forged a formidable connection through years of national duty and shared stints in the Indian Premier League with franchises like the Delhi Daredevils and Lucknow Super Giants. Mishra’s revelations provide a unique perspective on the man currently tasked with steering the future of Indian cricket.
