India head coach Gautam Gambhir has asserted that the team’s inexperienced bowling attack should receive full credit if the visitors succeed in the upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on November 4.
With senior bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya unavailable, the visiting side is set to feature a largely inexperienced bowling unit on the tour. Mohammed Siraj leads the pace contingent with 51 ODI appearances, while other options include Arshdeep Singh, Aqib Nabi, Anshul Kamboj, and Gurnoor Brar.
Bowling Lineup Challenges
Addressing reporters ahead of the opening fixture, Gambhir pointed out that the grueling international calendar has severely impacted squad preparations and player availability across formats. He emphasized that the burden on the bowling department will be immense during the overseas assignment.
- Inexperienced Attack: Gambhir noted that India will field one of the most inexperienced bowling lineups seen in ODI cricket for quite some time.
- Pace Options: Arshdeep Singh stands as the most seasoned bowler after Siraj, while several youngsters carry minimal international exposure.
- Credit Where Due: The head coach stressed that any positive outcomes in the fifty-over games must be attributed directly to the efforts of these young fast bowlers rather than focusing solely on the batting unit.
- Batting Strength: By contrast, Gambhir acknowledged that India possesses substantial experience within the batting order, shifting the spotlight onto how the bowling unit handles overseas conditions.
Focus on Individual Development
Aside from discussing the overall team structure, Gambhir also touched upon individual player development, specifically mentioning the technical adjustments made with opening batter Abhishek Sharma during the recent T20 matches. The head coach worked closely with Abhishek in the nets to help him counter off-spin bowling more effectively. According to Gambhir, making continuous technical improvements is essential for young players to stay a step ahead as international opponents constantly study and adapt to their playing styles throughout a long series.
