Dutch Eredivisie club FC Twente have released a special tartan-inspired football kit to celebrate an extraordinary two-decade friendship with supporters from the Scottish town of Stranraer. The unique kit, which draws inspiration from Scottish heritage, is set to make its official debut during Twente’s upcoming league fixture away against AZ Alkmaar this weekend. The bond originated back in 2006 when a terminally ill Dutch supporter named Dennis Van Unen harboured a final wish to witness an Old Firm match in person.
Origins of an Unlikely Football Bond
Two Stranraer supporters, Jim McKie and James Hilton, stepped in to help Dennis achieve his ambition, arranging tickets and accompanying him on an unforgettable tour of Scottish football that included visits to Ibrox and Celtic Park. Though Dennis passed away the following year at the age of 34, the connection between the Dutch fans and the Scottish coastal community only strengthened. Reciprocal visits became an annual tradition, culminating in Twente travelling to Scotland for a pre-season friendly in 2017 to mark a decade since their friend’s passing.
- FC Twente’s new tartan kit will debut in their away match against AZ Alkmaar.
- The bond began in 2006 when Scottish fans helped a dying Dutch supporter attend an Old Firm game.
- Stranraer local Billy Hodge featured as an unlikely model for the club marketing campaign.
- Twente previously wore a tartan away strip during the 1994-1995 season.
What This Means for the Clubs
The new strip has already proven immensely popular with the club’s fanbase, serving as a permanent tribute to a partnership rooted in working-class solidarity and shared football passion. Twente marketing manager Leon Molenkamp emphasised that the initiative ensures this rare international fan relationship will endure for future generations. On the pitch, fifth-placed Twente will hope the special shirt brings good fortune as they continue their domestic campaign and European aspirations in the Dutch top flight.
