Former India cricket captain Rahul Dravid and Olympic bronze-medallist badminton star Saina Nehwal have been officially nominated by the Sports Ministry as athlete representatives for the proposed Organising Committee of the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The high-profile multi-sport event is scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad, marking a major milestone for Indian sports administration as preparations begin well ahead of the opening ceremony.

  • Athlete Representation: Rahul Dravid and Saina Nehwal selected to bring elite athlete perspectives to the organising board.
  • Leadership Structure: The committee is expected to be headed by Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.
  • Private Sector Additions: Jinal Mehta and Ananya Birla have been recommended as corporate representatives from the private sector.
  • Financial Outlay: The operational cost is estimated between Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 crore, backed by a government grant.

Committee Formation and Structure

The upcoming Organising Committee for the Ahmedabad Games is expected to feature between 12 and 15 members in total. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who holds the sports portfolio, is slated to head the body. Alongside Dravid and Nehwal, the committee will include key stakeholders from the Indian Olympic Association and the Commonwealth Games Association of India, ensuring a comprehensive administrative framework. Private sector figures such as Gujarat Titans chairman Jinal Mehta and RCB-associated Ananya Birla are also part of the wider recommendations.

Budget and Financial Planning

Organisers are aiming for a streamlined, non-profit corporate model similar to the structure adopted by the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. The sports ministry has committed a grant-in-aid of Rs 2,000 crore, to be disbursed upon formal requests by the state government. Public infrastructure developments driven by urban departments will remain outside the core games expenditure. With an anticipated 15 to 17 sports disciplines on the roster, authorities hope to deliver a scaled-up, efficient tournament that avoids past administrative pitfalls.
