Former Netherlands international Dirk Kuyt has been appointed as Fenerbahce’s interim coach, stepping into the role just a week before the Turkish club faces his former side Liverpool in the Champions League. The 46-year-old takes over following the resignation of Ismail Kartal, who stepped down after a 2-1 defeat against arch-rivals Galatasaray.
Kuyt had been serving as an assistant coach under Kartal since June 2026. Club officials confirmed that the Dutchman will remain in charge on an interim basis while the board searches for a permanent successor. His managerial debut in the top job will come in a domestic league fixture against Goztepe, followed immediately by the high-profile European clash against Liverpool at home.
Immediate Challenges and Domestic Standings
Fenerbahce currently sits fifth in the Turkish Super Lig table, trailing league leaders Galatasaray by a six-point margin. Kuyt inherits a squad looking to recover quickly from the psychological blow of losing the derby. The management believes his deep familiarity with both Turkish football and the club’s culture will steady the team during a demanding fixture period.

European Ambitions Under New Leadership

He later played for Fenerbahce, capturing the Turkish league title during the 2013-14 campaign before transitioning into coaching roles with ADO Den Haag, Beerschot, and FC Dordrecht.
