Former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik has launched a staunch defense of star opener Abhishek Sharma following criticism regarding the left-hander’s approach against off-spinners. The backing arrives in the wake of Abhishek’s blistering 113 runs off just 38 deliveries during the third T20I encounter against New Zealand at Wellington on Tuesday.
Critics have frequently pointed out that the young opening batter struggles against slow bowling variations, often falling victim to off-spinners early in his innings. However, Karthik firmly rejected this narrative, emphasizing that Abhishek’s aggressive intent causes substantial damage to opposing bowling attacks before any dismissal occurs. Highlighting a specific instance from the Wellington match, Karthik noted how the batter targeted New Zealand off-spinner Michael Bracewell, plundering 15 runs from only four deliveries to completely disrupt the opposition captain’s plans.

Assessing the Impact and Opposition Strategy
Karthik argued that opposing teams often deploy off-spinners in the opening overs purely out of desperation and fear of Abhishek’s destructive scoring capacity. According to the former wicketkeeper-batter, getting out after inflicting a rapid 30 or 40-run onslaught serves the exact purpose of an explosive modern opener. He stressed that evaluating a player with such high strike-rate demands based solely on occasional dismissals against a specific type of bowler overlooks the enormous pressure placed on the fielding side.
Consistency Across Formats and Conditions
The veteran cricketer further praised Abhishek for maintaining consistent high-level performances across diverse international pitches and high-pressure franchise tournaments like the Indian Premier League for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Noting challenging tours such as Australia, where large boundaries and demanding pitches tested visiting batting lineups, Karthik highlighted that the left-hander continually provided flying starts. Deserving of his top-tier status in international rankings, the explosive opener continues to validate his selection through match-winning displays that dictate the momentum of games right from the powerplay overs.
