Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza won the toss and elected to bowl first against Afghanistan in the opening match of their three-match T20I series at Sharjah. The visiting side made crucial changes to their lineup, handing a maiden T20I appearance to fast bowler Ernest Masuku while welcoming back Ben Curran to the white-ball setup following a spell on the sidelines.
However, the side suffered a setback prior to the toss as pace spearhead Blessing Muzarabani was ruled out of the fixture due to an unresolved physical niggle. Afghanistan captain Ibrahim Zadran noted that he would have chosen to field first as well given the conditions, but expressed confidence in his batting unit’s ability to post a challenging target on the board.
Team Selection and Strategy
- Toss Decision: Zimbabwe won the toss and chose to bowl first in Sharjah.
- Debutant: Fast bowler Ernest Masuku received his first international T20 cap for Zimbabwe.
- Squad Changes: Ben Curran returned from injury, while Blessing Muzarabani missed out with a niggle.
- Opponent Approach: Afghanistan captain Ibrahim Zadran urged his players to express themselves without scoreboard pressure.
Series Context and Head-to-Head Record
Afghanistan enter this encounter holding a heavily dominant head-to-head record in the shortest format, having secured victories in all but two of their 21 previous T20I meetings against Zimbabwe. This run includes five consecutive wins dating back to December 2024. Both squads recently locked horns during a competitive ODI tri-series in the United Arab Emirates that also featured Bangladesh. On that occasion, Afghanistan emerged victorious in the final showdown with a comprehensive seven-wicket triumph, setting a high psychological benchmark heading into this newly minted series. Afghanistan fielded a formidable lineup featuring explosive opening batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz, seasoned all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, and premier spinner Rashid Khan, while Zimbabwe countered with a balanced outfit anchored by experienced campaigners like Ryan Burl and Wellington Masakadza.
