Yuzvendra Chahal Discloses Honest Conversation With Rohit Sharma Over 2023 World Cup Snub

Veteran Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has broken his silence regarding his controversial omission from India’s squad for the 2023 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. Despite establishing himself as one of the country’s most prolific white-ball bowlers, the experienced campaigner was left out of the final fifteen as the team management opted for a different balance.

Speaking on his career and selection decisions, the 36-year-old revealed that then-captain Rohit Sharma personally communicated the tactical rationale behind leaving him out of the home tournament. According to the spinner, the team required deeper batting reserves down the order alongside an extra fast-bowling option.

  • Tactical Strategy: Rohit Sharma explained that the team management wanted batting depth extending down to number eight.
  • Pace Preference: The selection panel prioritized adding an extra fast bowler to the squad for home conditions.
  • Clear Communication: Chahal noted that having direct clarity helped him stop worrying about selection setbacks after the tournament.
  • T20 World Cup Return: Strong performances in the Indian Premier League later helped him secure a spot in the 2024 T20 World Cup squad.

Understanding Selection Demands

Chahal admitted that missing out entirely on global tournaments has been difficult to accept throughout his career, noting that missing the 2021 edition hurt much more than being benched during the 2022 campaign where he traveled with the squad. Although he earned selection for the 2024 T20 World Cup following an impressive domestic T20 season, he remained on the sidelines throughout the competition.

Looking Back at White-Ball Career

Having claimed 96 wickets across 78 T20 international appearances since his debut in 2016, the spinner remains one of the format’s standout performers for his country. Despite missing multiple global events including the 2023 ODI tournament and subsequent fixtures, the bowler recently concluded a county stint with Northamptonshire before announcing his retirement from first-class cricket in August 2026 with 148 wickets in 49 matches.
