Afghanistan coach Richard Pybus has heaped praise on his bowling attack, describing them as a very diverse and competent unit after they stormed to a seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the ODI tri-series final in Sharjah. Ace spinner Rashid Khan led the charge with figures of 3 for 41, restricting Zimbabwe to a modest total of 169 in 43.3 overs before Afghanistan comfortably chased down the target in 34.3 overs.
Dominant Bowling Performance and Captaincy Praise
The comprehensive victory capped off a remarkable week for the team under the leadership of newly appointed Test captain Rahmat Shah, who has now guided the squad to seven consecutive ODI victories. Rashid’s latest performance marked his sixth successive ODI with at least three wickets, placing him alongside Pakistan great Umar Gul for the rare achievement. Pybus highlighted the collective effort of the bowling lineup and the calm leadership of Rahmat.
- Rashid Khan claimed 3 for 41 to dismantle Zimbabwe for 169 in the final.
- Ibrahim Zadran anchored the chase with an unbeaten 70, supported by Rahmat Shah’s 43.
- Rahmat Shah extended his winning streak as captain to seven successive ODI matches.
- Afghanistan successfully chased the target in 34.3 overs to secure the tri-series trophy.
Building for the Future and Addressing Challenges
Reflecting on the grueling conditions in the UAE, Pybus commended the physical conditioning and medical staff for maintaining a fully fit squad despite intense heat and humidity. The coach emphasized that playing top-tier Full-Member nations more frequently is critical for the ongoing development of the team as they look to build squad depth. Afghanistan has enjoyed a productive run in recent weeks, recording strong individual and team performances across formats in both Ireland and the UAE. Pybus noted that the squad is steadily developing the ability to adapt to varying global conditions, driven by fierce internal competition for places and consistent execution across both spin and pace departments.
