Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes openly questioned manager Michael Carrick’s tactical approach following a devastating 4-1 defeat away to Como in the Champions League. The heavy loss plunged the Old Trafford club into a fresh crisis on the European stage, leaving the coaching staff facing intense scrutiny over their future direction.
Travelling supporters were subjected to a dismal display as United crumbled defensively against an organised Italian side. Carrick walked over to apologise to the 700 fans in attendance after the final whistle, mirroring the actions of former managers during past periods of severe turmoil at the club. However, the post-match fallout quickly intensified when senior midfielder Fernandes delivered a critical assessment of the team’s defensive strategy during his post-match media commitments.
Tactical Disagreement Goes Public
Fernandes highlighted a fundamental flaw in the team’s game plan, pointing directly to the decision to sit off opponents rather than applying aggressive pressure higher up the pitch. The Portuguese playmaker suggested that passive defending allowed quality opponents too much time and confidence to pick their passes and exploit open spaces.
- Heavy Defeat: Manchester United suffered a 4-1 Champions League hammering at the hands of Como.
- Captain’s Critique: Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the tactical decision not to press man-to-man.
- Managerial Response: Michael Carrick deflected blame back onto the players, citing a lack of basic running effort.
- Travelling Apology: Carrick walked across the pitch after the match to apologise directly to the 700 visiting fans.
Manager Fights Back Over Work Rate
In response to the midfielder’s pointed remarks regarding tactics, Carrick offered a blunt assessment of his squad’s physical application on the pitch. The head coach insisted that systemic choices and tactical setups become entirely irrelevant if players fail to perform the fundamental athletic requirements of professional football.
As pressure mounts on the coaching staff, questions will inevitably be asked about squad harmony and tactical alignment moving forward in the European campaign. The fallout from this humiliating result threatens to disrupt United’s season unless results and performances improve rapidly in upcoming fixtures.
