Former Premier League and West Brom Striker Saido Berahino Retires at 33 to Begin Coaching

Former Premier League striker Saido Berahino has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33. The forward, who made his breakthrough with West Bromwich Albion, has hung up his boots to transition into a full-time coaching role with the Burundi national team.

  • Career Milestone: Scored 36 goals in 121 appearances for boyhood club West Bromwich Albion, including 20 goals during the prolific 2014-15 campaign.
  • Stoke City Move: Joined Stoke City in January 2017 for 12 million pounds, but struggled for form as the club suffered relegation from the Premier League in 2018.
  • International Career: Represented England through various youth levels before switching his international allegiance to his native Burundi, earning 23 caps and scoring twice.
  • Coaching Transition: Expressed pride and gratitude in shifting focus to serve the Burundi national team from the technical area and guide the next generation of players.

Reflecting on a Well-Traveled Journey

Berahino released an emotional statement titled ‘A Letter To The Game’ on social media to confirm his retirement. After leaving English football, his career took him across several continents and leagues. Stints in Belgium with Waregem and Charleroi preceded a return to England with Sheffield Wednesday under Darren Moore in August 2021. He subsequently played in Cyprus, India, and Slovenia before deciding that his playing days had reached their natural conclusion. Reflecting on his humble beginnings, the striker noted how football carried a young refugee kid from the streets of Bujumbura to the pinnacle of the English top flight.

Focusing on the Next Generation

Having experienced both the highs of prolific scoring seasons and the lows of falling out of favor during turbulent club spells, Berahino believes he has valuable lessons to pass on. His immediate priority is to dedicate his energy to developing football in Burundi. By stepping into coaching, the former forward hopes to use his vast international and club experience to elevate the national setup and inspire upcoming talents in East Africa.
