The Indian Sports Ministry has conducted a rigorous review of the country’s performance at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games following a lower-than-expected medal haul in key disciplines such as athletics and badminton. Chaired by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in New Delhi on Thursday, the high-level meeting brought together key sports administrators to evaluate the results and chart a roadmap for upcoming international assignments, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
India secured 85 medals at the regional multi-sport event, comprising 21 gold, which marked a notable decrease from the record 106 medals achieved during the previous edition in Hangzhou. During the proceedings, officials addressed concerns regarding athlete fitness, scheduling issues, and the overall administrative oversight across various National Sports Federations. The government emphasized that adequate financial resources had been provided throughout the preparation cycle, leaving no room for excuses regarding institutional backing.
Key Highlights of the Review Meeting
- Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that National Sports Federations can no longer complain about financial support and must deliver performance on the ground.
- IOA President P.T. Usha raised concerns regarding the fitness and injury status of key athletics competitors who traveled to the Games.
- The ministry urged federations to widen the talent pool and produce multiple athletes of elite caliber rather than relying on solitary stars.
- Officials highlighted the urgent need to integrate sports psychologists and high-performance mental trainers into athlete support systems.
Looking Ahead to Future Multidisciplinary Events
Discussions during the session also pivoted toward long-term preparations for upcoming global and continental competitions. Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao stressed that India must target a top-three finish at the 2030 Asian Games in Doha. Furthermore, authorities highlighted that the 2030 Commonwealth Games, slated to be hosted in Ahmedabad, should be treated as a major national priority requiring serious administrative preparation from every single federation from this point forward.
