The sporting world turned its attention toward the capital this week as a high-profile DP World Tour event at the Delhi Golf Club drew an extraordinary gathering of global icons. Despite brief weather interruptions earlier in the week, the USD 4 million tournament brought elite international sport directly to the heart of India, highlighted by the unexpected presence of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and Brazilian football great Ronaldo.
Tournament Highlights and Celebrity Appearances
- Sachin Tendulkar enjoyed the atmosphere near the 18th hole as a global ambassador for DP World.
- Brazilian football icon Ronaldo tried his hand at the course, meeting Minister of State for Sports Raksha Khadse.
- Former India captain Kapil Dev emphasized the importance of providing young athletes with world-class facilities and exposure.
- Other notable sporting figures including Yuvraj Singh, Kevin Pietersen, and Brett Lee also attended the tournament.
The prestigious $4 million DP World Tour competition features fourteen golfers from the world’s top one hundred rankings, including major international names like Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood. However, the off-course excitement was dominated by legendary figures from cricket and football mingling with fans and participating in promotional activities. Ronaldo, wearing his iconic status proudly, praised the layout of the course while assessing his own performance on the greens. He noted that the challenging rough provided a true test of skill, even as he expressed satisfaction with a few of his well-struck shots during his time on the fairways.
Meanwhile, the crossover appeal of golf among cricketers continues to grow significantly. Former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has frequently mentioned that adopting golf earlier in his life could have extended his cricket career by thousands of runs. Current stars such as Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma have also integrated golf into their training regimes to refine their batting swings. The convergence of these diverse sporting legends at the Delhi Golf Club underscores golf’s rising prominence in a nation historically devoted to cricket, bridging disciplines and providing fresh excitement for sports enthusiasts nationwide.
