India comfortably thumped Australia for a 6 wicket win at Chennai in their first world cup outing. Australia chose to bat after winning the toss and they lost Mitchell marsh to Bhumrah for a duck at the start. Australia struggled to score runs at the beginning, and Chennai was too hot for both the teams and also the fans in the stadium.
But they picked momentum after the spell of Siraj and Bhumrah. Hardik was hammered by Warner and Smith. But they were silenced once the spinners came in. Kuldeep caught Warner (41) on his own bowl and Jadeja bowled steven smith at 46. Australia was at 110-3 at this point in 27 overs.
Things seem to be ok for them but they lost Labuschagne (27) and Alex carey (0) in the same over of Ravindra Jadeja. They couldn’t bounce back from this and only Maxwell (15) and Cummins (15) reached double digits from here. Jadeja took 3 wickets, while Kuldeep and Bhumrah took 2 each and the rest one each. Australia was all out for 199 in 49.3 overs.
The Indian reply was pathetic at the start. Rohit sharma, Ishan Kishan and Sreyas Iyer fell for duck. Hazelwood took 2 and Mitchell stark took 1. Kohli and Rahul then made a match winning partnership 165 runs before Australia could take another wicket. Kohli was taken by Hazelwood again at 85. Kohli scored only 6 boundaries in his effort.
Australian spinners Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell proved ineffective. Rahul (97) and Pandya (11) took the winning runs in 41.2 overs to seal their opening game of 2023 World cup. Rahul scored 8 fours and 2 sixes. India will face Afghanistan next on 11th October and Australia will face South Africa on the 12th.
