IPL media rights go for INR 48,390 crores. Viacom 18 gets digital rights. Viacom 18, with the backing from Reliance got the digital rights for IPL for a 5 year period (2023-2027). A hefty sum of Rs. 20,500 crores won the non exclusive Package C (digital rights of 18 non-exclusive marquee games per season), paying another Rs. 2991 crores. Disney Star secured its Indian sub-continent legacy rights with a figure of Rs. 23,575 crore (Rs. 57.5 crore per game).
The BCCI secretary Jay Shah took to twitter to express his joy as IPL conquered new heights in the e-auction. Further, he added that IPL is now the 2nd most valued sporting league in the world in terms of per match value.
Additionally, the auction sold international broadcasting rights which were split between Viacom 18 and Times Internet. The Package D had a bas price of Rs 3 crore per game with overseas TV and Digital Rights went for more than 1300 crores.
The IPL will now be bracketed alongside the National Football League(USA), National Basketball Association(USA), and English Premier League(England) in terms of sheer valuation. These are some of the most watched sporting events in the world.
Viacom 18 plans to take IPL streaming to 60 million FreeDish homes with this win. They also secured IPL TV and digital rights for key foreign markets including Australia, England, Caribbean and South Africa.
The new deal revokes the monopoly of a single broadcaster. Sony had acquired the rights with Rs. 8200 for the first 10 years (2008-2017). Star stepped in with a bid of 16347.50 and secured it for the next five years.
Viacom 18 won the Package C where the digital rights of 18 non-exclusive marquee games were auctioned. The winning bid was of Rs. 2991.6 crore at the rate of 33.24 crore per match. The package comprised of 90 matches.
Globally, IPL has a per match value of 14.61 million USD which is only second to NFL where every match is worth 17 million USD.
A total of Rs. 48,390 crore was split between 4 packages.
Package A: Disney Star – Rs 23,575 cr for 410 games – for Indian sub-continent legacy rights.
Package B: Viacom18 – Rs 20,500 cr for 410 games – for India Digital rights.
Package C: Viacom18 – Rs 2,991 cr for 98 matches – for non-exclusive India digital rights.
Package D: Viacom18 and Times Internet – Rs 1324 cr for 410 matches – for overseas TV and digital rights.
