Christiano Ronaldo set a new international record after the Worldcup qualifying match between Portugal and Ireland on 1 September 2021. With this, Ronaldo now holds the title for all-time men’s international leading goal-scorer, moving ahead of Iran’s Ali Daei (109).
The epic goal led to Portugal winning the FIFA 2022 World cup European qualifier match 2-1 against Ireland.
While Ronaldo took 180 matches to break the record, Ali Daei set his record of 109 goals from only 149 matches.
After his signing with Manchester United about a week back, Ronaldo fills the social media again a day after his return to the club.
Ronaldo would have gotten to the record earlier in the game if it wasn’t for the young Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu.
Although Ireland had a lead in the first half of the match, Ronaldo recaptured the game in the 89 th minute with a goal that got him the record, and then surprised the Irish fans with another header in the injury time. With this goal, not only did Ronaldo get an international record, but Portugal qualified for the 2022 FIFA Worldcup as well.
The first half of the match was not so enjoyable for Portugal or Ronaldo fans as he missed a penalty which took a total of four minutes of VAR checking to get approved. The Irish fans were to thank the young goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu for that save.
Ronaldo replied with two goals in the second half earning him an international record for the men’s all time international top scorer and winning Portugal a place in the 2022 FIFA World cup.
With the goal in the 89th minute and the header in the 96th minute of extra time, Christiano Ronaldo set a new international record for the men’s all time international top scorer.
