Manchester United mounted a stunning recovery from two goals down to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory against AS Roma in the Champions League at Old Trafford. Manager Michael Carrick watched his team fall behind early before an inspiring second-half turnaround breathed new life into their European campaign. Matheus Cunha led the charge with a crucial brace, while Bruno Fernandes added another from the penalty spot to complete the thrilling rescue act.
- Matias Soule opened the scoring for Roma in the eleventh minute with a composed finish.
- Donyell Malen doubled the Italian side’s advantage shortly after from a penalty kick.
- Bruno Fernandes converted a retaken spot-kick before Matheus Cunha struck twice to seal the win.
- Cunha received a red card late in the match following a second yellow card offense.
Match Turning Point
After a disastrous start that saw the hosts trail by two goals within twenty minutes, the momentum shifted dramatically after the interval. Bruno Fernandes missed his initial penalty attempt, but referee leniency allowed a retake due to encroachment. Fernandes made no mistake at the second attempt, galvanizing the squad and silencing restless home supporters.
Matheus Cunha then capitalized on defensive errors to equalize before firing a thunderous winner past the goalkeeper. Although Cunha received a late dismissal for a reckless challenge, the ten men successfully defended their narrow lead through stoppage time.
Campaign Implications
This remarkable victory provides massive relief for Michael Carrick following a dismal run of domestic results. Previous defeats against Atletico Madrid and Como had severely damaged their European aspirations. However, this gritty performance restores vital confidence as the tournament progresses toward the knockout stages.
Roma will rue another collapse after previously dropping points from winning positions earlier in the competition. Meanwhile, United must prepare for upcoming fixtures without their suspended goalscorer Cunha, aiming to maintain this newfound momentum across all competitions.
