Sebastien Pocognoli faces a critical juncture in his managerial tenure as he prepares to announce his second Scotland squad ahead of crucial UEFA Nations League fixtures. Following consecutive home defeats, the Belgian coach needs a minimum of four points from the remaining fixtures against North Macedonia and Switzerland to avoid the threat of relegation to League C and keep promotion hopes alive.
Squad Selection Dilemmas and Key Returns
The upcoming international fixtures present significant selection puzzles across all departments, with several high-profile names pushing for recalls while others battle fitness concerns and a lack of regular club minutes. Pocognoli must balance match fitness with tactical requirements as the national team looks to bounce back from recent setbacks in League B1.
- Midfield Boosts: Scott McTominay is in line for a recall after scoring two doubles for Napoli following his recovery from minor heart surgery, while fellow midfielder Lewis Ferguson continues his strong form with Bologna.
- Defensive Concerns: Central defender Scott McKenna is ruled out for two weeks, and right-back remains a problematic area with limited regular starters at club level.
- Attacking Options: Che Adams is pushing for a return to the squad following two goals in four games for Torino, whereas Oli McBurnie has staked his claim after scoring his first goals of the season for Hull City.
- Goalkeeping Situation: Angus Gunn faces uncertainty after being left on the bench for San Jose Earthquakes, while Scott Bain retains strong claims following impressive domestic performances.
Upcoming Fixtures and Tournament Context
Scotland faces an uphill battle to secure second place in League B1 and reach the promotion play-offs, requiring favorable results against both North Macedonia and the table-topping Swiss side. Slovenia’s results will also play a decisive role in determining whether the team can salvage their campaign or face the prospect of dropping to League C.
