Venezia produced a stunning upset in Serie A on Saturday, defeating Napoli 1-0 to claim their first victory against the Partenopei since 1942. Newly appointed head coach Davide Nicola made an immediate impact in his debut match, lifting the club off the foot of the table temporarily and compounding Napoli’s recent slump.
The breakthrough arrived early in the second half when Akor Adams latched onto a long ball, beating goalkeeper Alex Meret via a deflected strike in the 49th minute. Massimiliano Allegri’s side pressed for an equalizer, introducing rested stars Rasmus Hojlund and Kevin De Bruyne off the bench to salvage a result.
- Akor Adams scored the decisive goal in the 49th minute for Venezia.
- Kevin De Bruyne had a crucial penalty saved by Filip Stankovic in the second half.
- The result marks Venezia’s first top-flight win over Napoli in over eight decades.
- Napoli have now lost five of their opening nine matches across all competitions.
Match Turning Point and Penalty Drama
Napoli looked poised to equalize midway through the second half when Hojlund was brought down inside the penalty area by Matias Moreno, resulting in a spot-kick. However, Kevin De Bruyne failed to convert, with his low penalty expertly saved by Venezia goalkeeper Filip Stankovic diving to his right. Stankovic, son of former Inter Milan midfielder Dejan Stankovic, produced several world-class saves late in the game to deny Stanislav Lobotka and Alisson Santos, preserving the historic clean sheet.
League Implications and Upcoming Fixtures
The shock defeat leaves Napoli sitting in ninth place in the Serie A standings with 10 points collected from their opening seven fixtures. Massimiliano Allegri’s squad will need to regroup swiftly ahead of their upcoming Champions League assignment at home against Bodo/Glimt on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Venezia continue their difficult survival campaign, hoping this monumental victory under Nicola acts as a catalyst to climb out of the relegation zone.
