Veteran Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin delivered a sharp and witty response to a social media user who attempted to mock him for consistently backing wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson. The exchange unfolded following India’s performance in the concluding stages of their five-match T20I series against New Zealand, where Samson experienced a difficult run with the bat.
Despite India securing a successful 3-2 series victory on foreign soil, Samson struggled to find his rhythm, managing only 107 runs across the entire five-match assignment. His low-scoring campaign culminated in a dismissal of just four runs from ten deliveries during the fifth and final T20I encounter held in Hamilton. Observing these struggles, a spectator on social media targeted Ashwin for previously naming Samson as his preferred choice in the squad, prompting an immediate online retort from the seasoned all-rounder.
Ashwin’s Sharp Social Media Comeback
Unfazed by the criticism directed at his player selections and analytical takes, Ashwin took to his official social media handle to shut down the troll with a crisp line. The veteran cricketer did not hold back when addressing the online heckler.
- The Troll’s Jab: A social media user criticized Ashwin for declaring Sanju Samson his primary choice despite modest output.
- Ashwin’s Response: The spinner fired back instantly, stating that while Samson is his preferred choice, the critic appears to have a full-time obsession with the player.
- Series Context: Samson managed only 107 total runs across five matches against New Zealand, sparking wider debates regarding team selection.
- Team Outcome: Despite individual batting struggles, India successfully clinched the away T20I series with a final scoreline of 3-2.
Series Reflections and What Lies Ahead
Reflecting on the tour, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged that while the team triumphed in the series, maintaining consistent momentum remains a key area for improvement. The visitors stumbled slightly in the final two fixtures after establishing a commanding three-nil lead, allowing New Zealand to bounce back strongly in Hamilton and Auckland. Team management highlighted that gaining overseas experience against quality opposition serves as a vital learning curve for the younger members of the squad as they transition into upcoming formats.
