New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner etched his name into the record books on Sunday, becoming his country’s most-capped player in men’s T20Is with his 143rd appearance during the fifth and final match against India at Seddon Park in Hamilton. The experienced left-arm spinner surpassed fellow bowler Ish Sodhi, who previously held the standalone record with 142 T20I appearances for the Black Caps.

Santner reached the historic milestone after more than a decade of representing New Zealand in the international arena, having made his format debut back in 2015. Over his extensive career, the 34-year-old has established himself as a vital pillar for the team with consistent performances using both bat and ball in the shortest format of the game.

Milestone Appearance and Career Statistics

Entering the milestone fixture, Santner boasts strong overall numbers in international T20 cricket:

  • Surpassed Ish Sodhi by making his 143rd T20I appearance for New Zealand.
  • Has scored 1,117 runs in 143 T20Is at an average of 20.30, with a highest score of 77 not out.
  • Claimed 151 career wickets at an average of 23.09, featuring best bowling figures of 4/11.
  • Became only the third New Zealand bowler to reach the 150-wicket milestone during the preceding fourth T20I against India.

Match Context and All-Time Standings

Following Santner at the top of New Zealand’s all-time appearance list is Ish Sodhi with 142 matches, while former fast bowler Tim Southee stands third with 126 appearances. Former opening batter Martin Guptill occupies the fourth position with 122 matches, and middle-order batter Daryl Mitchell rounds out the top five with 109 T20I appearances for the national side.

In the series finale itself, the milestone match proved challenging for the veteran spinner as he went wicketless and conceded 39 runs in his four overs. India posted a competitive total of 191/8 in their allotted 20 overs, powered by half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer after losing early wickets. Fast bowler Adam Milne was the pick of the New Zealand bowling attack, returning impressive figures of 4/19.
