Former Liverpool and Burnley Prospect Keelan Williams Forced to Retire at 22 Due to Heart Failure

Former Liverpool and Burnley academy prospect Keelan Williams has been forced to call time on his professional football career at just 22 years of age. The young defender made the difficult decision to hang up his boots following a diagnosis of stage-one heart failure, which came after he underwent two major open-heart surgeries and two separate pacemaker implants during his medical struggles in 2025.

Medical Ordeal and Career-Ending Complications

Williams initially discovered he had a congenital bicuspid aortic valve at the age of 15 during a routine check-up with the Wales Under-16 squad. For years, the condition caused no symptoms, allowing him to progress through the academy ranks at Liverpool and Burnley, alongside representing various youth international age groups for Wales. However, medical complications escalated significantly toward the end of 2024 when routine monitoring revealed that a leak in his heart valve had worsened dramatically and required immediate surgical intervention.

  • Underwent valve-sparing aortic root replacement surgery and dual-chamber pacemaker implantation in January 2025.
  • Spent 11 grueling days in intensive care being treated for sepsis, a collapsed lung, and respiratory failure.
  • Suffered from stage-one heart failure with a dangerously low ejection fraction percentage of just 37%.
  • Made the final decision to retire after a recent echocardiogram showed virtually no clinical improvement, with his ejection fraction only rising to 38%.

Coping with Early Retirement and Family Support

Despite being forced to walk away from the sport he loved, Williams has drawn strength from the overwhelming backing of his family, friends, and supporters. His older brother, Wales international and Premier League full-back Neco Williams, has served as a vital source of inspiration as he adjusts to a completely new lifestyle away from the pitch. Williams now takes five daily medications to manage his condition and continues to attend regular cardiology, pacemaker, and heart failure clinics.

Reflecting on his journey, Williams is urging players across all levels of the football pyramid to seek out routine cardiac screenings whenever possible. Because his condition was initially caught entirely by accident during a national youth team camp, he emphasizes that proactive health checks can save lives, particularly at lower-tier clubs where resources for medical testing may be much more limited.
