Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed deep disappointment with his spin bowling unit following an eight-wicket defeat to the West Indies in the opening Test at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Defending a modest target of 170 runs on a turning pitch, the hosts failed to apply sustained pressure, managing to claim only two wickets in the fourth innings as the visitors comfortably chased down the target in 35.1 overs.
Shanto pointed out that inconsistent lengths and a failure to capitalize on favorable conditions cost his side dearly, noting that the spin attack finished with just eight wickets across the entire match compared to sixteen scalps taken by the West Indies bowlers. Despite the loss, the skipper offered strong backing to senior spinner Taijul Islam, urging supporters not to judge the veteran too harshly based on a single subpar performance.
Match Situation and Key Figures
- West Indies secured an eight-wicket victory inside the final sessions to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
- Jomel Warrican claimed a match haul of 9 for 116, earning the Player of the Match award for his stellar performance.
- Bangladesh managed only two wickets in the fourth innings as the tourists cruised to their target of 170.
- Taijul Islam returned match figures of 2 for 130 across 38.1 overs during the opening Test encounter.
Context and What Lies Ahead
The spin-friendly surface in Mirpur was deliberately prepared to exploit the perceived batting weaknesses of the West Indies against turning deliveries. However, Shanto admitted that the tactical gamble backfired due to his own team’s batting collapses in both innings as well as erratic spells from the bowling attack. The Bangladesh leadership remains confident that the team can regroup ahead of the second and final Test of the series, with expectations high for a strong comeback from the senior bowling group.
