The series-deciding final Test match between South Africa and Australia at Newlands in Cape Town is poised for a dramatic finish on Saturday, with both the series outcome and crucial World Test Championship points hanging in the balance. South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton highlighted the high stakes of the encounter, noting that the grueling contest would be decided entirely on the final day without the safety net of a draw.
Resuming their second innings under immense pressure at 140/4 on the fourth morning, the hosts staged an incredible recovery before eventually being bowled out for 387 runs in 134.4 overs. The defiant batting performance was largely built around a magnificent 154-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Rickelton and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder. Rickelton contributed a gritty 101 runs from 219 balls, while Mulder anchored the lower-middle order with a brilliant knock of 115 runs off 221 deliveries.

Match Situation and Pitch Dynamics
Australia had earlier established a solid 100-run first-innings lead after posting 429 in response to South Africa’s first-innings total of 329. Needing 288 runs for victory, the visitors face a daunting task on a deteriorating pitch. Speaking ahead of the final day, Rickelton pointed out that while the new ball could offer scoring opportunities for the batting side, the slow and low nature of the surface would make run-scoring increasingly difficult as the day progressed. Maintaining a required scoring rate of roughly three runs per over presents a major challenge on a wearing track.
What Happens Next
With the three-match series deadlocked at 1-1, the ultimate winner of the fixture will claim not only the prestigious series trophy but also vital ranking points in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. Both teams enter the final day knowing that a victory secures ultimate bragging rights, while any failure to press home an advantage could swing the momentum toward their opponents in the global standings.
