India spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule has clarified that senior slow bowlers Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy are fully aware of why they have remained on the sidelines during the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand. Despite being named in the squad, both players have struggled to find a spot in the team combination as the management continues to back alternative bowling choices.

The omission of the two frontline spin options comes at a time when the touring attack has experienced challenging outings, including a heavy 87-run defeat in the fourth T20I where New Zealand racked up 259/7. Despite the bowling struggles at Eden Park, India hold an unassailable 3-1 lead heading into the final fixture of the series in Hamilton.

  • Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy have not featured in any matches of the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand.
  • Spin coach Sairaj Bahutule emphasized that team combination requirements led to their continued absence from the playing XI.
  • Bahutule confirmed that both experienced spinners are keeping their morale high and working hard in training sessions.
  • The coaching staff remains hopeful that opportunities will open up in upcoming fixtures and the subsequent one-day internationals.

Team Combination Dictates Selection

Addressing reporters after the recent match, Bahutule stressed that selection decisions are entirely driven by tactical needs and pitch conditions rather than a lack of form. He noted that both players understand the demands of international squad balance and remain prepared to step in whenever required. The team management has maintained absolute clarity with the squad regarding tactical roles across different phases of the innings.

Looking Ahead to Upcoming Fixtures

With the final T20I approaching in Hamilton before the team shifts focus to the ODI leg of the tour, the coaching staff has left the door open for potential changes to the playing combination. While Chakravarthy is not part of the ODI squad, both players are expected to figure in future selection discussions as India continues preparations for upcoming global tournaments in SENA conditions.
