Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel has indicated that left-arm pace bowler Arshdeep Singh is under serious consideration for a red-ball debut during the ongoing tour of New Zealand. The decision comes as the team management looks to assemble a strong group of back-up bowling options for the upcoming two-Test series in Wellington and Christchurch.

Arshdeep recently reached a major career milestone by playing his 100th T20I match for India during the second fixture against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, where he picked up two wickets. While primarily known as a white-ball specialist, the fast bowler boasts solid domestic numbers across 24 first-class outings, capturing 73 wickets at an average of 30.71, including two five-wicket hauls and a best performance of 6/40.

Squad Strategy and Workload Management

Morkel explained that the selection committee has mapped out a detailed rotation and backup strategy to handle player workloads across the demanding multi-format tour, which features five T20Is, five ODIs, and two Test matches. The management aims to ensure that all squad members, ranging from regular starters to developmental players, remain fully prepared for shifting pitch and weather conditions.

  • Arshdeep Singh is actively discussed as a red-ball backup option for the two Tests.
  • The left-arm quick reached his 100th T20I appearance during the Christchurch encounter.
  • Domestic statistics show Arshdeep has claimed 73 wickets in 24 first-class matches.
  • Several frontline Test players are gaining match practice through ongoing India A fixtures.

What Happens Next

Following the conclusion of the T20I series encounters, India will shift focus to the five-match ODI series starting on November 4. Meanwhile, several red-ball specialists and Test squad members—including pacers Akash Deep and Anshul Kamboj alongside batters Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, and Dhruv Jurel—are featuring in India A matches to fine-tune their form ahead of the opening Test match scheduled for November 19.
