Charles Leclerc completed a strong double top for Ferrari on Friday when he led the times ahead of Mercedes championship leader Kimi Antonelli in second practice for the upcoming United States Grand Prix. The Monegasque driver clocked a best lap of one minute and 35.291 seconds to edge out his Italian rival by just 0.042 seconds during a competitive afternoon session at the circuit.

Leclerc, who previously tasted victory in Austin, maintained impressive pace throughout the day after also topping the earlier opening practice session. Meanwhile, Red Bull driver Max Verstappen slotted into third place, finishing 0.189 seconds adrift of the leading Ferrari time. The session also featured minor drama as Antonelli was forced into an early pit stop to address a loose seat issue, while several drivers encountered traffic and tight skirmishes on track.

Practice Standings and Key Highlights

  • Charles Leclerc set the benchmark with a fastest lap time of 1:35.291 in the second practice session.
  • Kimi Antonelli recovered from an early seat adjustment to secure second place for Mercedes.
  • Max Verstappen finished third quickest for Red Bull, closely following the leading pair.
  • Lewis Hamilton and George Russell rounded out the top positions for Ferrari and Mercedes respectively.

Title Implications and Grid Penalties

The practice running carries extra significance as Antonelli looks toward a potential championship triumph this weekend. The young Mercedes driver can secure the drivers’ crown to become Formula One’s youngest champion if results fall heavily in his favor. However, the competitive pace shown by Ferrari and Red Bull suggests a hard-fought battle for supremacy during qualifying and the main race.

Technical hurdles also impacted several teams down the grid. Three drivers had grid penalties confirmed between the running sessions, with Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad receiving a five-place drop, Alpine driver Franco Colapinto handed a ten-place penalty, and Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto hit with a twenty-place sanction for exceeding power unit component limits. As teams finalize their setups, tyre degradation and qualifying simulations will dictate the ultimate pecking order for the weekend.
