Former stalwart all-rounder Kieron Pollard has been elevated to the position of head coach of the Mumbai Indians franchise ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League season. He steps into the role to replace Mahela Jayawardene, who chose to step down from the coaching position earlier this month. Pollard brings a long-standing relationship with the franchise, having represented the team as a player between 2010 and 2022 before transitioning into a batting coach role following his retirement from active league cricket.
- Pollard played 189 matches for Mumbai Indians, scoring 3412 runs and taking 69 wickets during his career.
- He was an integral part of the squad during all five of their title-winning campaigns in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.
- The franchise finished ninth in the 2026 standings, prompting a structural shake-up in the coaching staff.
- Co-owner Nita Ambani expressed confidence in Pollard’s deep understanding of the team culture and winning mentality.
Coaching Transition and Legacy
The appointment marks a significant milestone for the franchise as they look to rebuild following a challenging couple of seasons. After finishing tenth in 2024 and ninth in the 2026 edition, the team leadership decided a fresh direction was necessary. Pollard expressed immense pride in taking charge of the only franchise he has ever represented in the tournament, emphasizing his commitment to restoring the team’s dominant culture.
Looking Ahead to the Next Campaign
Pollard will immediately begin collaborating with the remaining support staff and management to plan player retention and auction strategies. The new head coach faces the immediate challenge of galvanizing a talented roster and steering the team back to the playoffs. With his extensive experience as both a talismanic player and a tactical mentor, the franchise hopes to recapture the championship pedigree that made them one of the most successful outfits in league history.
