The Pakistan Super League is actively exploring the creation of an off-season six-a-side tournament, provisionally titled the HBL PSL Sixes, as part of a broader strategy to generate new revenue streams. Tournament chief executive Salman Naseer revealed that conceptual plans are currently under discussion ahead of the upcoming governing council meeting.
While nothing has been finalized, the proposed short-format competition would draw inspiration from existing events like the Hong Kong Sixes. The initiative is designed to keep the PSL brand active throughout the entire calendar year while engaging fans in smaller markets across Pakistan that traditional fixtures have not yet reached.
Expanding Reach and Revenue
The Pakistan Cricket Board has been evaluating various options to maximize commercial opportunities and maintain audience engagement. Because the compact six-a-side format requires minimal logistical overhead and fewer participating players, officials believe it can be successfully hosted in smaller regional stadiums.
- The proposed off-season tournament is tentatively called the HBL PSL Sixes.
- The format aims to take competitive matches into smaller cities across Pakistan.
- Organizers must still navigate the challenge of securing suitable windows for foreign player availability.
- Discussions follow previous board talks regarding advancing the main PSL schedule.
Logistical Challenges Ahead
Despite the commercial potential, tournament organizers face notable scheduling hurdles. Finding an optimal window where top international players remain available to participate alongside domestic stars remains a primary concern. The mainstream PSL has historically been hosted across four major Pakistani venues—Karachi, Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi—since returning entirely to the country in 2020.
The latest exploratory talks arrive as the board prepares for upcoming scheduling conflicts. It was recently confirmed that next year’s main PSL edition will once again clash directly with the Indian Premier League for the third consecutive year. The upcoming governing council meeting is expected to finalize official dates, tournament schedules, and the venue for the player auction.
